An elderly man sat alone in his wheelchair beside a busy sidewalk, struggling to get over a high curb.

He placed both hands firmly on the wheels and pushed as hard as he could. The chair moved forward slightly, but the front wheels hit the curb and slid back down.

He tried again.

And again.

Each attempt seemed harder than the last. His arms were getting tired, but he refused to give up.

People kept walking past him.

Some clearly noticed what was happening. One man glanced at the wheelchair before continuing down the street. A woman walked right beside him while looking at her phone. Several others looked in his direction, but no one stopped.

The old man said nothing.

He simply lowered his head, placed his hands back on the wheels, and tried one more time.

Then a young woman appeared.

She was carrying a bag over one shoulder and walking quickly through the crowd. As she approached, she noticed the old man struggling with his wheelchair.

Her steps slowed.

For a moment, it looked like she was going to help.

But then she checked her watch.

She hesitated for a few seconds before turning away and continuing down the street.

Just like everyone else.

The old man watched her leave, then quietly returned his attention to the curb.

But the young woman had only walked a short distance when she suddenly stopped.

She stood still in the middle of the sidewalk.

Then she turned around.

The old man was still there, trying to push himself over the curb. His wheelchair moved forward, hit the edge, and rolled backward once again.

This time, she didn’t keep walking.

She quickly placed her bag down and hurried back toward him.

“Do you need some help?” she asked.

The old man looked up at her in surprise.

She moved behind the wheelchair, carefully grabbed the handles, and began to push while he turned the wheels with his hands.

Within seconds, the wheelchair finally made it onto the sidewalk.

Something the old man had struggled with for so long had taken only a few moments with another person’s help.

He slowly turned around and looked at her.

A warm smile appeared on his face.

The young woman smiled back.

She picked up her bag, gave him a small wave, and prepared to leave. To her, it wasn’t anything extraordinary. She had simply seen someone who needed help and decided that being a few minutes late was worth it.

She had only taken a few steps when she suddenly heard the old man calling after her.

She stopped.

When she turned around, she saw him reaching inside the pocket of his coat.

He slowly pulled out a small envelope.

The young woman looked confused as he held it toward her.

She immediately shook her head.

“No, please. I don’t need anything.”

But the old man continued smiling and held the envelope out once more.

After hesitating, she finally accepted it.

She carefully opened the envelope and looked inside.

Her expression changed instantly.

The smile disappeared from her face.

She froze.

Then she slowly looked back at the old man, unable to believe what she was seeing.

Because what he had placed inside that envelope wasn’t an ordinary thank-you gift.

And what the old man told her next finally revealed why he had been sitting on that sidewalk all along…
